Thursday 17th May 2012 – travelling then walking **** sunny then cloudy

Had really good night, we slept 9 hours! Did exercises and after breakfast packed up and went into La Franqui to fill water up. Drove on down the coast road to the lovely Collioure. We came here a couple of years ago and were lucky enough to arrive on a special day where they laid on a mock siege of the castle with helicopters and goodness knows what else and had fireworks in the evening. As its yet another bank holiday in France today (holy Thursday apparently) we thought we might be lucky again but no – doesn’t matter it is still a beautiful place :) We decided to make life very easy for ourselves and park at the Camper Aire because for 7.50 euro’s you can park for 24 hours. It would cost 5 to park in the town and had the added bonus of not having to drive off tonight to find somewhere else. We parked on the top tier and got sorted then had lunch and got changed before catching the free shuttle bus down into town :) We walked through the old town down to the harbour and along the sea wall. It is sunny but quite breezy on shore (very unusual here) and there is quite a swell. The yacht in the harbour was bobbing about like mad! Walked round to the other side of the bay where we had our moules and frites last time we were here. Carried on right round the bay and over into the next one. We had a nose at posh hotel where rooms range between 130 and 465 euro’s a night with a view right over to the old town. Very swanky. Found a path up to an old restored windmill and went to have a look then carried on up a very rocky path to the Fort on top of the hill overlooking the town. It looked like a very long walk but we had been up, seen as much of the fort as you could for free and walked back down a different way in an hour! It was a lovely walk, lots of flowers. Spent a little more time near the harbour and watched an artist doing a fantastic ink drawing of the tower. Back to the bus where we had to wait for another one because there was too many in the queue but it was only 10 minutes and the driver was a really nice lad – lots of banter with the passengers and he tried a little English for our benefit :) Back to the van for a rest and watch camper life! Hilarious – glad we don’t have this much company every night – 53 by 9 p.m. Found a nice lane for a walk in the evening, 2 donkeys, lots of flowers and a brilliant view up the coast towards Leucate one way and over Collioure the other :) Great day.
